Joanna Allen
Joanna Allen is an artist and printmaker. Her artworks and digitally printed silk scarves evoke childhood memories; a magical world filled with flowers, birds, hares, plus a few literary characters. She graduated with a Degree in Printed Textiles from Manchester Metropolitan University, and is a member of Peak District Artisans and New Mills Gallery.
She has also designed furnishing fabrics, tapestry needlepoints and greeting card designs for companies including Primavera, Papryrus USA, Anna French, The National Trust and Liberty.
There’s an atmosphere of sanctuary in Joanna's artwork which always belies an undercurrent of drama and magic, hidden just below the surface. It’s a world where story book characters come to life, flowers bloom on dreamy moonlit nights, and solitary song birds listen and wait. Her artworks and digitally printed silk scarves evoke childhood memories; a magical world filled with flowers, birds, hares, plus a few literary characters. Her intaglio prints include etchings, collagraphs and monoprints, often incorporating subtle touches of watercolour, pastels, salt and bleach, to create a distinctive and romantic feel.
Joanna's artworks include mixed media paintings and collagraph prints. Joanna loves breaking rules, often layering watercolours, pastels, and even salt and bleach over the prints to create a distinctive quality: each ‘print’ is therefore totally unique. She is not a fan of producing identical editions!
In addition to original prints and giclées, there is a collection of romantic silk scarf designs inspired by Shakespeare; including Moth (look out for cobwebs, pease-blossoms and mustard seeds); Ophelia, and Hurly Burly. All silk scarves are printed locally in very small print runs, onto luxurious Silk Crepe de Chine.
